The Co-Working Tomato

It’s the end of tomato season. The last of the summer tomatoes are coming in, despite drought conditions here in the Northeast (we can’t use a hose, but that doesn’t stop me from getting out the watering can every morning! 😉

Sometimes you just need a little attention to grow.

So what does this have to do with you?

My colleague Gloria and I are starting a group: The Co-Working Tomato (CWT for short). Actually, we have been doing this together for well over a year. We start each week by spending a little over an hour doing focused work during what we call Tomato-Time, an activity inspired by the Pomodoro Technique (hence, the tomato).

Our marketing coach Téa Silvestre Godfrey (http://storybistro.com/) started these Co-Working Tomato session as part of one of her programs. A bunch (maybe a peck or a bushel, to stay with the tomato metaphor) of us
call into a conference line to do some laser-focused work.

The Pomodoro Technique is a time management system that uses distraction free, 25 minute bursts to get more work done — you can can learn more about the system at http://pomodorotechnique.com/

For our CWT, we all call into a conference line and check in for five minutes at the beginning, setting a goal for what we want to accomplish during our 1st 25-minute time slot. We set a timer and work on our own for 25 minutes, without distraction. That means closing your browser, your email, turning off your phone…

After the 25 minutes expires, we check in, let each other know how it went, and pick a goal for the next 25 minutes.

We do two of these work bursts (and sometimes a 3rd), using the 5 minute breaks to check in on progress. The final check-in and celebration of what we accomplished takes place in a private Facebook group.

Gloria and I get so much out of it, we decided to see if others want to join us!
The comaraderie and support is an added bonus. I’ve become such good friends with 2 participants that I had lunch with them last June when I was out in LA!

Starting October 3, we will be hosting two sessions a week: Mondays and Thursdays at 8:00am PST/11:00am EST.  One or both of us will be there to facilitate the process. We will provide a conference line for the call-in, as well as and instructions.
